Lance Corporal Samuel Reyes

On September 6, 2004, Lance Corporal Samuel Reyes was in Fallujah riding in the back of a 7-ton supply truck along with 12 other marines when a suicide bomber pulled up next to the truck and detonated its payload of C-4 explosive and 250-millimeter shells. The blast reduced the truck to little more than a chewed-up driveshaft. « read more

Sergeant Merlin German
U.S. Marine
Sgt. German was 18 years old in February of 2005 when his HMMWV hit a roadside gasoline fed Improved Explosive Device (IED) on the streets of Baghdad. The blast resulted in 3rd degree burns on over 97% of his body. He was not expected to survive his injuries--given just a 3% chance of survival. « read more

Staff Sergeant Paul McQuigg
3rd Assault Amphibious Battalion 1st Marine Division
On February 26, 2006, Ssgt. Paul R McQuigg’s HMMWV was the second in a convoy of nine that day. As they crossed a bridge, a bomb exploded right next to his vehicle, detonated by remote control. The first words he wrote when he woke up in the hospital in Germany with his jaw wired shut was, “How are my Marines?” « read more

Sergeant Kenneth Haley
1st Marine Regiment Marksmanship Training Unit
On June 3, 2006, Sergeant Haley was patrolling in a Hummer just north of Karma Iraq, when vehicle was hit by an Improved Explosive Device (IED). He was able to exit his vehicle and search for the triggerman and other IEDs. Moments later, he was shot in the chest by a sniper. « read more

Corporal Michael Worthey
1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division
On April 4, 2006, Cpl. Worthey’s platoon was patrolling in the Khandari market place. Cpl Worthey and LCpl Van Gordon were point men, leading the platoon while observing the route ahead. Cpl. Worthey walked around a wall, when the wall exploded beside him. « read more

Lance Corporal Michael Cole
1st Battalion 1st Marines 1st Marine Division
On May 24, 2006, Lance Corporal Michael Cole was participating in a vehicle mounted patrol, serving as a HMMWV driver. As his convoy was traveling on a rural road, an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded underneath his vehicle. Of the six passengers on board, three were killed instantly. « read more

Corporal Douglas W. Hickman
HQ Battery, 11th Marines, 1st Marine Division
On March 31, 2006, Corporal Hickman was assigned as the gunner on a 7-ton motor transport vehicle, in support of a re-supply mission to Camp Farris. Approximately 4 miles into the mission, two 80mm mortars combined with fuel jugs exploded near his vehicle. The explosion sent shrapnel and fuel in many directions, engulfing his vehicle in fire. « read more

Corporal Gabriel G. Jacobs
1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division
On morning of January 24, 2007, Corporal Jacobs’ tank section was traveling through the open desert when his tank hit a triple stacked anti-tank mine. It was a catastrophic kill to the tank, in which the blast sent Cpl. Jacobs up into the turret injuring his back, breaking his jaw and both lower legs. « read more

Corporal Medbery
3d Battalion, 11Th Marines, 1st Marine Division
On April 9, 2004, while serving as the Platoon Commander’s driver and escorting key Marine Corps personnel, Cpl. Medbery’s convoy was hit by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). Immediately following the explosion, his vehicle received enemy fire from the left side of the convoy, disabling his vehicle. « read more

Lance Corporal Jesse J. Aguilar
1st Battalion 1st Marines 1st Marine Division
On March 8, 2006, LCpl. Aguilar was posted in the turret of a HMMWV, acting in the capacity of a Gunner while providing security for his Platoon’s Patrol Base. Approaching at a high rate of speed, an on-coming insurgent vehicle headed straight toward LCpl. Aguilar’s HMMWV and self-detonated his vehicle. « read more
